The Transcultural Psychosocial Organization (TPO) Cambodia is one of the leading non-governmental organizations that deal with mental health care and psychological support for victims of sex trafficking. The organization was established in 1995 as a subsidiary of the Netherlands-based TPO International to help Cambodians deal with mental and psychosocial problems. TPO's activities are anchored on the principle that, "There is no health without mental health," (What We Do, 2018). In addition, the NGO strongly believes in the universal right to health care including mental care.
TPO is focused on provision of quality mental health care to the locals through its treatment centre and grassroots projects throughout Cambodia. In addition, the organization trains the Cambodians in psychosocial support and mental health care and collaborates with other research organizations to carry out research and offer consultancy services. TPO's mission is to enhance the well-being of the locals affected by psychosocial and mental health problems to increase their productivity in work, family, and the community at large.
The primary beneficiaries of TPO's activities in Cambodia are victims of trafficking. According to the UNIAP (2010), human trafficking is a serious crime that involves deceiving people into sexual servitude or labour with the aim of exploitation. Due to the harsh economic situation in the country, many Cambodians migrate from rural areas to urban areas or even to other countries in search for employment. However, many are lured by brokers who then sell them as sex slaves or labour slaves. For this reason, TPO's primary goal is to identify and help the victims of labour and sex trafficking while developing strong support systems to address their psychosocial needs (Rehabilitation of Victims of Trafficking, 2018). In addition, the organization strives at increasing social cohesion and the likelihood for integration of sex and labour trafficking victims in the community. Importantly, TPO's efforts focus on promoting self-esteem and self-confidence of the victims through provision of mental health care not only to the adults but also to the young boys and girls subjected to long-term stress and trauma (Rehabilitation of Victims of Trafficking, 2018).
