The Protection and Affordable Act
The Protection and Affordable Act that was passed into legislation provides various provisions that influence the current nursing practices. One of the provisions was the creation of insurance exchanges through whereby individuals that had no access to public coverage are capable of purchasing insurance with premium and cost-sharing credits. And that was done by eradicating upper limits of care costs and allowed the young adults below the age of 26 years to remain on their parents' insurance policies. The ACA also provided the coverage for people who were not able to afford the health insurance by increasing the Medicaid's income level qualifications (American Nursing Association,2010). In that regard, the bill included the coverage mandate which excluded out of pocket payment. An estimated 30 million Americans were expected to gain health insurance, and this meant that a sizable workforce is required. As such, there will be shortages of nurses to meet the increased number of patients, and the existing workforce will strain to provide effective health to the patients (Anderson,2014).
Another provision was the development programs that aimed at recruiting new nurses and promoting career advancement withing the nursing profession.IOM recommendation was that nurses should achieve higher levels of education and teaching through the improved systems of education that support seamless academic progression. Also, nurses were recommended to have full partnership with other healthcare professionals and physicians in the United Statest healthcare redesigning (American Nursing Association,2010). Such initiative positive impacted the nurse positively since more nurses advanced in their career through various training and advanced learning opportunities (Lathrop & Hodnicki,2014).
