I consider being in the navy is a way of life, not just a job. It is a call of duty for the service of the nation. The navy offers a unique opportunity to discover oneself and grow as a leader. A career as a U.S Navy Officer will improve my character, give me direction, give me control over my thoughts, and offer professional training. In the navy, one gets a chance to live, learn, and work with the best and brightest, who are not afraid of challenges and responsibilities.
After much research and consultation from those who had previously served and are still in service, I choose the U.S Navy over other forces as it fits with my goals and ambitions. The navy will provide opportunities for me to exercise my leadership skills and offer the opportunity for growth. The navy is equipment driven and is not limited to where they operate, whether the air, sea, or land. This gives more opportunity for growth and exploration while also providing a wonderful experience. Also, one gets an opportunity to travel all over the world.
I received my master's degree in Bioinformatics from Mississippi Valley State University with a GPA of 3.6. In 2016, I completed my bachelor’s degree in Biology, a minor in Mathematics from Edward Waters College in Jacksonville, FL, having attained a GPA of 3.4. During my undergraduate studies, I received an academic scholarship as well as a golf scholarship. I attended Pierce County High School, where I graduated in 2012 as an honor graduate.
Bioinformatics is the use of computers to analyze biological data. To make sense of an enormous volume of complex data, researchers need to combine knowledge from biology, computer science, and statistics. It involves data analysis, which involves going from raw data and computing it to achieve results, software development for analysis and modeling that involves making equations representing the biological systems.
The support I have gotten from my family in my decision to join the army is immense as it is navy oriented. My grandfather served 32, whereas my cousins and uncles also served time in the navy. Although the decision to join the army has been personal, members of my family that have served time have been a significant influence. I have seen the tremendous impact the navy has had on them in terms of physical, mental, and career growth. I am much convinced that it is the best career choice for me.
Teamwork has also been a major contributing factor in my desire to work in the navy. Even though I am very capable of achieving goals on my own, I prefer to work as part of a team. A team environment where everyone works towards achieving a similar goal is motivating and creates a sense of belonging. This, in turn, results in better results and a sense of satisfaction. I was a member of the High School music band, whereby I was the section leader for the saxophones in the junior and senior year. I was also the golf captain for three years in college.
In conclusion, I have been preparing for life as a navy by implement routine and discipline in my daily life. I have been practicing punctuality in all my engagements as punctuality breeds discipline, leading to mental strength. Getting up early every morning, at the same time, and going for a run has become my daily routine. I engage in other physical activities like cardio and high-intensity workouts to improve and work on my fitness. I have also been shouldering many more responsibilities at home and taking up voluntary community activities, like cleaning the streets.
