What are the ethical responsibilities of a person? Ethics outline the moral code a person's behavior should be based on ("ethics," 2012). Currently, giving embellished or false details in resumes has become a trend that's gaining attention. According to FakeResume (2019), unless you play the game well, you will always be beaten to the job by a less deserving person. This notion has led to the high embellishment of resumes alerting employers. Moral ethics are essential based on our code of behavior; they define our action based on the community's perspective of wrong and right. Legal requirements define the details or information included in a resume that is legally accepted by law. A good resume should fulfill both legal and ethical requirements.
It is essential for people to understand their ethical and legal obligations. The requirements are set, though people chose not to follow them due to the current trends. It is publicly advertised that more than half of all job seekers have misinterpreted resumes promoting exaggeration in a resume (FakeResume, 2012). Some people do it out of fear while others give exaggerated details to stand-out in the job market competition.
This study aims to give insight into the do's and don'ts when writing a resume. A resume can be defined as a summary of a person's education, credentials, skills, achievements, and other important information (Doyle, 2019). The provision of embellished information in a resume will be analyzed in different perspectives and views, and the best possible advice will be derived.
The following are detailed answers to questions provided on the subject;
Ethically, Irvine was expected to write the truth. Contrary to the expectations, Irvine decided to embellish all his qualifications. Additionally, he included fake details in his resume. For instance, he lied to have a bachelor of science degree in food and nutrition from the University of Leeds. According to "ethics" (2012), when writing a resume, one should consider using egoism approach. These suggest that one should consider how the exaggerated details are going to affect himself or a group of people. For instance, when Irvine was applying for Tv broadcasting, there might have been a more qualified person who missed the opportunity. St. Petersburg times organization was also frustrated when the truth came out, and Irvine got fired from his Tv show. Irvine's decision affected all the parties involved. He lost his job as well as his fan base due to his decision.
When writing a resume, a wrong decision can cause a significant impact on one's life. For instance, the decision made by Irvine also affected the loyal customers of the Tv show. The decision made by Irvine affected other job seekers as well as the employer. It is unethical to give false details to benefit oneself at the expense of others. Egoism approach is often recommended in writing of resume in order to consider oneself and the groups of people involved.
The information in Irvine resume illustrated the extent to which he was ready to in order to get the job. Irvine not only exaggerated his achievement but also lied about some of his accomplishments and experiences. Irvine's information gave his resume the best chance to get the job position in the market. Conclusively, Irvine was determined to get to the furthest point to give his resume a chance. Based on Irvine's actions, we deduce that many people are determined to lie in their resume to get the job irrespective of who gets affected in the process.
It is unethical to give a misinterpreted resume. Resume misinterpretations include; false credentials, false experience, false chronology, embellished experience, and false references. Based on Irvine resume;
Credentials refer to the evidence of authority, rights, or entitlement privileges in a written form. Ethically, without the required credentials required for the job, a job seeker has no chance of getting the work. A bachelor's of science degree in food and nutrition from the University of Leeds is categorized as a false credential because the record was invalid. If Irvine lacked credential information in his resume, he would have a lower chance of getting the position; hence, he opted to lie and include a false degree achievement.
Chronology in a resume refers to work experiences of an individual. The information provided by Irvine was not precise. His work experiences were either exaggerated or false. Based on Irvine resume, he provided that he had served as a white house chef. This information is misinterpreted to mean that he prepared meals for the president, although he prepared meals for the military personnel in the white house.
A False reference refers to giving incorrect information to an employer about an individuals' experience. References are essential in a resume; they provide additional details to a potential employer on the individual's suitability. References are usually obtained from previous employers, although employers might also give a false reference. Based on Irvine's information, he provided that he had received the five-star diamond award from the American Academy of hospitality sciences. This information can be categorized as a false reference; because he had not received the prestigious five-star diamond award or Mobil's five-star, but instead he'd received an award provided by a guy's apartment in new york given to anyone who pays a fee.
False experience refers to fake details on work experience included in a resume. Including fake experience in a resume indicates that you do not trust the decision an employer will make with your actual details. The provision of fake experience in a resume is due to the fact that; the details will not be further investigated. For instance; Irvine provided that he was a knight, Sir Robert Irvine, knight commander of the royal victorian order, handpicked by the queen. This information is categorized as a false experience because it is not valid.
The embellishment of a document refers to adding extra details or feature that are often untrue in order to make it more attractive. Embellished experience refers to the act of adding details in a resume to make it more appealing. The added details often lead to misinterpretation of the resume. For instance; Irvine provided that he had experience working in the royal wedding for Prince Charles and Princess Diana, which was an embellished experience. Although he picked fruits that went into the royal wedding, his resume was misinterpreted that he was one of the main chefs on occasion.
Judging from Irvine's work, he `was well suited for the position. He was not confident with his achievements; hence, he objected to lie in his resume. As a successful chef, some of the lies included are exaggerated. For instance, he should not have lied about his educational achievement because that would be the first stop of the organization when validating his details. Irvine was well suited for the position technically, although, he should have considered the extent of his exaggeration. In his resume, he opted to give the best impression on the employer; hence, his degree of exaggeration was high. Irvine gave all his details in exclusively, he made sure that the details were perfectly exaggerated to get him the job. Eventually, he got the job, but after the truth was known, he lost it all. In a resume, although one should consider exaggeration to be on the same platform with others, he should also consider the extent. In recommendation, when one decides to embellish his resume, he should not deter the main from the main idea for his future safety. Contrary, exaggeration can be considered as a good factor to consider when writing a resume; based on Irvine, exaggeration got him the job position which advertised his skills facilitating the fact that he was later re-hired.
The legal approach considers a lie to be different from others. Some of the information given by Isaacs (2019) illustrates that a legal approach expects everyone to follow the community's moral expectation. Legally, some information used by Irvine can be used against him, making him vulnerable for other job applications; thus, it is recommended to give information that can be justified. Some information provided, for instance, being a chef at the white house by Irvine can be used as an example of a good resume. Irvine success was due to his hard work that certainly caught the employer's attention. Legally, providing incorrect details is wrong, but the idea should change with the current trend to facilitate different people. Hence; all lies are not the same; some may lead to significant effects while others are less effective.
The information on knighthood was irrelevant in the position he was applying for, excluding the fact that it was a lie. It is essential to keep in mind the main agenda of a resume as well as the position that you are applying for in order to give the related details. Ethically, people should consider the significance of a resume to the employer and provide the expected details, although it is also essential to add additional information to act as a souvenir of your hard work or achievements. Additional information on a person makes him stand out among other job seekers and gives him a higher probability of getting the job.
Ethically, Irvine's action was wrong. Although nothing justifies his lying action, it is also good to consider that he was well equipped with the knowledge to handle the task that he was given. If he did not provide misinterpreted details on his resume, we can assume that he would have never gotten the job in the first chance. This means that lying facilitated his success and acted as a media to publicize his professionalism; this is why he was reconsidered for the position when he re-applied in the right way. Based on "ethics" (2012), Irvine action can be compared to an altruist. This is a person who considers his needs first; based on the consequential moral theory, Irvine had a right to put his needs first. Irvine actions can be consequentially justified. Based on an egoist approach, although, he considered himself, he sought to ensure the effectiveness of his actions did not affect other groups of people involved. His hard work ensured that his actions were made him stand out from the many individuals who provide false information but require additional tutoring to be a professional.
Besides, according to FakeResume (2019), almost everybody provides exaggerated details in a resume. Hence, Irvine context was exaggerated, but it can be argued that it was to put everyone in the same platform. Giving precise details would have made Irvine's resume venerable to others, and probably, he would have lost his chance. Based on whether to seek forgiveness or ask permission, I would prefer to seek forgiveness. Employers look for a hardworking and qualified fellow, so long as they have the qualities, I would opt to take my chances than give away details that will be dismissed on the first impression.
Lying has its advantages and setbacks. Lying is advantageous to a hardworking individual who can perform the task as expected. Currently, there are many hard working and well-suited people for every task who lack working experiences or achievements. These individuals may have a lower chance of getting the job; hence, they opt to embellish their resume. FakeResume (2019) is right because many people lie when writing a resume, meaning that such a scenario gives an unfair competition. It is advisable that if you embellish your resume, provide details that are true and justifiable. For instance, Irvine details included that he worked in the white house; this is true, and the statement should be left-biased so as nobody can testify against it because it does not sta...
