The professional journal “Human Resources Management Effectiveness from a multilevel perspective” (Majowska and Austen, 2019) details a study to investigate the relationship that exists between human resource management (HRM) and the organization’s performance. The authors say there is little known knowledge regarding this relationship, and the reason is that many of the studies conducted put the focus on the organizational level rather than evaluating the behavioral aspects of people in the organization. The research study’s objective is to fill the gap in the study on the effectiveness of HRM; it aims to do this by applying a multilevel approach. The analysis uses a systematic literature review in its methodology; it reviews and examines empirical research on the effectiveness of HRM and how it is linked to other variables concerning multilevel logic; this is by reviewing previous research on the topic and focusing on antecedents and outcomes. The authors end up with several findings from the study. First, there is an inadequate multilevel approach towards the effectiveness of HRM. Also, there is a gap in evaluating the antecedents and outcomes of an individual or a group level of analysis. The authors conclude the paper by stating that if more multilevel research is conducted and the effectiveness of HRM is analyzed by different levels of analysis, new opportunities may open up for further study. Furthermore, the authors hope that the article will stimulate further research on the topic.
Analysis
This study has significance to the topic of human resource management and the performance of the organization in a variety of ways. According to the authors of the research, there is little known knowledge about the topic; this journal aims at filling that gap, making it significant. Evidence exists that there is a high probability that the performance of the organization is prejudiced by both the HR practices and by more significant proximal measures (Stewart and Brown, 2019). Such is the reason why the focus should be on studying the effectiveness of HRM, just like what this paper does. Effective HRM can act as a catalyst in attracting and retaining qualified employees, motivate the workers to perform better, develop their skills, etc. despite these facts, there is little understanding about the mediating mechanisms and ways by which the practices of HR influence the performance of the firm. This study acts to bridge this gap. The paper explores HRM in a multilevel approach; the study may lead to new opportunities for further research on the phenomenon; it can also be used at various levels of analysis to serve in structuring and integrating future research in HRM. The benefits of these can be overwhelming to organizations on how they conduct their operations.
Conclusions
The paper explores the association between the effectiveness of HRM and the organization’s performance from a multilevel approach. The article looks at this relationship by reviewing relevant literature. The review of literature is well structured and organized; it looks at different scholars and their theories. One of these is Kozlowski and Klein (2000), who present a set of principles of the multilevel approach. Nonetheless, I believe that the paper does not adequately address the issue at hand. The research aims to fill the gap that exists in the HRM’s effectiveness by utilizing a multilevel approach. The primary findings of the study, according to the authors are that, there is scarcity in multilevel perspectives towards the effectiveness of HRM and that there is a gap in analyzing antecedents and outcomes of groups or individuals’ level of analysis. Looking at these findings, the paper does not thoroughly analyze the association between the HRM’s effectiveness and the firm’s performance.
