There are various issues in the society that concern the parents and that require keen intervention in order to ensure that there is proper coordination between the parents and the stakeholders in schools and the children. Much concern need to be put on the fact that in order to ensure that there is success in the learning objectives and that the children succeed in their education, smooth relation between the parents and the stakeholders of schools is key. In this light, there is need to ensure that learning institutions develop ways of how they complain to the parents in a unique way to avoid any cases of misunderstanding and confrontation but at the same time ensure that cordial relationship lasts and that the parents play their role in improving the quality of education to ensure that the children acquire knowledge and skills for necessary for personal development and the development of the nation.
There are various ten steps that should be followed when complaining to parents. The first step is to ensure that the parents know that the main goal of the school is to help their children succeed. This requires that the school management look for ways to have a common ground with the parents and ensure that the parents appreciate the fact that they are both committed towards the success of the children; this will encourage the parents to appreciate working together with the teachers. The parents will then focus on the big picture of the success of the children. The second step is to start the conversation in a cautious manner and acknowledge the strengths of the child. In this manner, the teachers need to appreciate the preciousness of the children in school.
After having a cautious opening of the discussion, the next step is to provide records of dates, times, notes and the decision that have been made in the past regarding their children and the steps that the teachers have taken towards the success of the children. This proves to be invaluable to the parents and helps them to appreciate the role of the teachers in molding their children; this also makes the parents to develop a positive perception regarding the aim of the discussion they are having. The fourth step for the teachers is to be proactive and ensure that they manage the discussion. In this manner, the teachers need to ensure that the highlight the past successful areas of the students and give the parents the parents the opportunity to criticize their children or their efforts independently without developing skewed thoughts from the teachers views.
The fifth step is to show the parents by illustrating the wanting areas that the parents need to step up their efforts. The illustration need to highlight the areas where the parents need to improve and show the parents the required standards to which they should conform. This step is very crucial in that it gives the parents an idea of exactly what they need to do to improve their effectiveness in the running of the school. This step also highlights the expectations that the children have on the parents. The next step is to allow the parents to ask questions for clarification and ensure that they understand their role and what the school exactly wants. In this stage, if the parent asks a question beyond the knowledge of the teacher, the teacher needs to develop a tactical approach towards the same and request for more time to give a credible answer to the parents.
The next stage addresses exceptional and occasional cases of confrontation that may ensue between the parents and the teacher. This stage of confrontation usually results from stage six of question and answer which can result from misunderstanding. On the occasion when parents face confrontational parents, it is advisable to either end the discussion with the parent in a tactical manner or give the parent an opportunity to cool and reflect on the issues under discussion. In case the meeting is ended prematurely, the teacher needs to schedule the next meeting with the parent, if possible, or refer the case to a higher authority that may be the principal, vice principal, school counselor among others. In case the meeting continues successfully, the teacher needs to seek a bit of personal information about the children and the parent to help in understanding the background of both the teacher and the student effectively. However, the teacher needs to limit the amount of personal information from the parent.
The next step is to enquire about the relationship between the parents and their children and how such relationships affect the commitment of parents towards the success of their children. This requires that the teachers do a critical evaluation on the motives of the parents and advise on the best ways that the parents can improve on their efforts on the success of their children in school. This is the stage that may necessitate knowledge of neighborhood issues to help in understanding how the social, religious, cultural and economic factors affect the commitment of the parents towards the welfare of their children in school. Understanding of the neighborhood issues helps the teachers to make their complaint in a way that suits the conditions of the parents to ensure success of the meeting and ensure that the parents change positively.
The final step is to remind the parents about the mission, vision, goals and the strategies they require fulfill such goals. This is the stage where the teacher gives the parents a leaflet containing the mission, vision and the policy of the school to remind them of their need to fulfill their duties. In this manner, the parent will have a change of heart to ensure that the parent develops a personal feeling on the need to step up efforts for the improvement of the condition of his child without being pushed by the school management. This also helps the teacher to end the meeting on a friendly note and provide the parent with the answers on issues not clear or those that he forgot to ask. Finally, the policy leaflet given to the parent also helps them to remember their role in the education of their children.
It is evident that managing difficult parents is one of the hardest things in the teaching profession and this requires the teachers to acquire and apply special skills in the course of having meetings with the parents. Acquiring good interpersonal skills with the teachers is crucial for the successful running of any learning institution and ensures that there is holistic growth and development of the schools. Moreover, the parents need to take keen interest in the success of their children and acknowledge that they also have a big role to play in molding their children and should not therefore leave every duty to the teachers.
