My desire to pursue a Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling was driven by my passion to advocate for mental wellness in the military community. I am an enlisted personnel for the Virginia Army National Guard. My daily work in the military inspired me to seek an advanced degree so that I could better serve others in uniform. I chose the Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling because it will give me the knowledge, value and skills that are necessary to promote mental health in the military community. My experience in the military helps me realize the need for quality mental healthcare for service members.
According to the Pentagon in the year 2018, 541 military members died by suicide. Getting fellow military members to help and intervening when needed, can go a long way in lowering those numbers. My goal is to start a mental health clinic for military members to receive quality and timely mental health care. To accomplish this dream, I need to gain relevant experience in mental health care. I plan to work in healthcare facilities such as hospitals and clinics to understand the different aspects of mental health care. Because the field of mental health care deals with the lives of people, the practitioner has to be skilled enough to make critical decisions through precise planning and execution. I believe these and other valuable skills will be taught as I pursue a Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at Liberty University.
My choice for Liberty University was driven by the fact that it is a Christian-based institution that offers holistic education. This is reflected in its motto, "Training champions for Christ." I believe Liberty University offers an excellent environment for me to thrive in since my personal beliefs and objectives are in line with university principles. A university built on Christian values is the best place for someone with high hopes and dreams such as myself. I believe that alongside the skills that I require from this university, I would be able to enrich my spirituality to push myself beyond expectations. Further, I believe that Liberty University is the best place to build my dream of becoming a counselor and champion for Christ that makes a difference in the community, the nation, and the world. As a prospective student, I agree with the Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling mission statement and diversity statement.
Liberty is a military-friendly school. As a member of the military; it is heartwarming to know that I'm attending a university that recognizes the sacrifices of military men and women. The best personal qualities that will enable me to succeed as a counselor are: my love for people and desire for helping others, compassion and empathy, and the knowledge gained through education BS in Psychology and MA in Human Services Counseling. I interned for two years at a Christian Counseling firm during my undergraduate where I led Anger Management and Celebrate Recovery Classes.
I am a staunch believer in God. Through the knowledge that I will get after pursuing a Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, I will accord counseling the professional touch it requires and align my work to the mission of the Department of Counselor Education and Family Studies which is to produce ethically and spiritually aware mental health counselors. Counseling is a field that is always evolving and offers limitless opportunities to an individual. I am confident enough that Liberty University will help me to realize some of these changing dimensions and keep me informed on the issues happening in this noble discipline. Additionally, a period at the university as I study Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling will make my potential similarly limitless and endless.
