Currently, nursing as a discipline and profession has several sub-professions. Some of these sub-branches are classified under community-based, community-oriented, and public health nursing (Stanhope & Lancaster, 2017). Moreover, when either of these classes of nursing professionals is stationed at a community center, they resume the position of a public health nurse, but their duties can assist in identifying the sub-class profession (Stanhope & Lancaster, 2017). In other terms, the paper analyzes a reflective interview with a community design; therefore, it will focus on explaining the comparison and contrast of a public health nurse with community health nurse by establishing the levels of preventions the interviewee focused.
Upon my interview with the community health nurse, it came to my attention that the nursing profession of both sub-classes was almost the same (Stanhope & Lancaster, 2017). A good example is that both sub-classes has the same identified role that states, both public and community health nurses were among the largest profession sector and it involved the prevention, education, activism, assessment, leadership, analysis, and evaluation of public health in general (Maville & Huerta, 2013). Moreover, upon his responses, it was clear that our outlined obligation was to ensure the community received preventive medication of illnesses as well as promote community well-being and safety (Maville & Huerta, 2013). Next, while nurses were responsible for caring for a single patient, community and public health nurses were responsible for the entire populations, regardless of age, gender, race, and ethnicity among others (Stanhope & Lancaster, 2017).
Ideally, the two types of nursing practice established a health-related intervention and preventive measures that identify health risk factors to the populations. Majorly, these two groups enhance more on preventive measures by ensuring that the communities are well educated on potential healthcare risk factors (Maville & Huerta, 2013). The set of responsibilities in public and community health nursing revolve around community health research of specific populations. The preventive measures that they are based on relies on advocacy with all governments (local, state, and national) that ensure equal access to medical service to all communities, both served and the underserved (Maville & Huerta, 2013). Lastly, it has been identified that these two groups are responsible for designing activities, managing budgets and evaluating the quality of public health programs (Maville & Huerta, 2013).
Unfortunately, the two professions community and public health nursing contains limitations, for example, community health nursing, his profession enhances the training of assessing the needs of people and families within a defined community, while public health nurses are trained for the entire population; thus, I was more experienced in handling patient from various cultures that he was (Maville & Huerta, 2013). Moreover, public health nursing had better opportunities to establish medical theories and plans for patient medication because of the high levels of academic achievements (Stanhope & Lancaster, 2017). Furthermore, I can assist community health workers to perform their duties while they can only offer assistance when operating at community levels (Stanhope & Lancaster, 2017).
To conclude, I realized that the Healthy People 2020 better guide would be of great importance towards sharpening the skill sets and knowledge of the nurse. First, since the guide focuses on preventive measures from violence, it can be used by the nurse to create short-term and long-term plans on how to increase preventive medical approaches. The best way to reduce injury-related cases is by ensuring that the nurse understands the protocols of establishing such programs, for example when focusing on domestic violence, the nurse needs to set the guides in regards of rehabilitating the victim and the most affected. By creating awareness on the issues affecting such families by illustrating the effects, they get upper hand in ensuring that all parties involved understand the knowledge towards their actions.
